Physical Description: Hal is almost six feet tall and well-built, leanly muscled. His short hair is jet black and much to his shock, hasn't started graying yet. No, he doesn't dye it, he's just lucky. Well, somewhat lucky. He's always had a rather high hairline and it's begun to recede a bit. But there's no gray yet. His face is very long, his cheek bones are high and sharp, his nose is long and hooks downward, while his jaw is rather short and squared. His most striking feature is his wide set, rather large blue eyes. Although combined with his features, black hair and pallid complexion, even Hal'll admit he looks a bit..sinister. His clothing is conservative and practical. He's not fashionable, but he's not hopeless either. He has a tendency towards dull tones and blues, he wears mostly dockers and other durable slacks and solid colored button down shirts, wool sweaters, and polo shirts. He wears comfortable loafers or other types of sensible shoes. When he reads, he wears a pair of glasses, other than that, he doesn't need them (and often forgets where he's left his glasses). Personality: Hal does his best to not be noticed, at least not in a manner that should attact people. He's used his rather sinister appearance and his reclusive home to hide his magical activities. Old habits are hard to break, and besides, his magic can be dangerous and the last thing he wants is some innocent bystander being hurt. He tends towards being stern, partially as part of his keeping others away. He's very much the old man who yells at children to get off his lawn. The other part is his upbringing. He's very much got the British stiff upper lip attitude and strigent common sense. And the droll and pithy sense of humour. He's rather blase. Not much surprises him anymore, he's seen a lot as a grey witch who's lived as long as he has. Also, he's a bit of a thrillseeker, although not the sort to throw himself out of a perfectly servicable airplane. That's just silly. But rock climbing and rappeling? Yes. Shocking him isn't easy and rendering him utterly speechless is in the way of a calendar event. He has a very cool head in a crisis. Having nearly killed himself with spells a couple of times, he handles life and death situations quite well. Emotionally, he's not so good. He's not terribly empathic and honestly, isn't very in touch with his own emotions. He's not good more for a pat on the shoulder and maybe going out for a beer with. He'd rather go do something about a friend's worry than listen to them whine about it. He's a decent man, he is the type who'll do whatever he can to help out those he cares about, his help is always practical. He's not even remotely the sentimental sort. He is close to his remaning sister Emily, although she lives back in Liverpool where they grew up. He calls her often, especially when he needs advice. Hal is ridiculously organized and disciplined, almost to the point of being obsessive about it. He hates mess, disorder and chaos, which is odd considering the sort of magic he practices. His control freakism partially stems from the randomness of his chosen magical field. He's well read and educated, one of the few ways to relate to him is to discuss books. He enjoys a lively literal debate and has strong opinions on everything he's ever read. Which is a lot of books. On a popular culture note, he absolutely loathes the Harry Potter books. He comes from a long line of witches and really, he only wishes learning magic was so simple as attending school and waving wands around. Rubbish, absolute rubbish. Sexuality: Heterosexual History: Henry Winston Killborne is the middle child of Winston and Emma Killborne. Born and raised in Liverpool, he grew up in a double world. In public, he was just a normal boy, although a clever and rather cheeky one. In the world of witchcraft, both of his parents came from long lines of powerful witches and he and his sisters were schooled accordingly. Emily, his elder sister, chose the path of white magic, while Hal and Amelia chose grey magic. Amy was horribly disfigured when a spell went awry when they were teenagers and ended up committing suicide. He thought about turning away from the grey path then, but it was his calling and he knew it. As for his public life, he was a brilliant student who excelled especially in language courses and history. He decided to become an English teacher, but after university, found no work for himself in England. He found a job in America, teaching English at a high school in Detriot. While he missed his family, he soon found companionship in the school's young history teacher, Jennifer Rowan. She had similar hobbies as he did, enjoying hiking, rock climbing and reading as much as he did. After a year they were engaged and married on Christmas Day when they were both 25. It was a rough marriage from the beginning. Jennifer accepted he was a witch, but was horrifed at how dangerous grey magic was. When his parents were killed in a grey magic ritual that had gone very wrong, Jennifer demanded at their funeral he give up practicing grey magic at all. He tried, but found he had no talent for white magic and truly hated the idea of even dabbling in black magic. They separated after five years of marriage and just as they were reconciling, a spell went horribly wrong. Jenny found Hal laying in the basement of his house, barely alive. She rushed him to a friend who healed him as much as possible, he spent a week in a coma and several weeks recovering. That was when she called it quits. She knew he couldn't give up his calling, but she couldn't bear that it would eventually cost him his life. She filed for divorce. Hal couldn't stand to see her everyday at the school and quit, taking his broken heart to Ann Arbor. He took out a small business loan and opened a used bookstore in Scarlet Oaks, Bargain Books. He used his teacher's pension to buy a small house and some land on the outskirts of the town for privacy. He's lived there for ten years now, a respected business man with a reptutation for being creepy and distant, especially amongst the children of the area. He hired a young woman named Lux to work in his store. He found out she was a bitten werewolf and offered her a place on his property to hide out in safely during the full moon. He's rather fond of Lux and treats her somewhat like a daughter. He's rather overprotective of her, although he tries not to show it too much. Since the Light of May: Hal has always been active in the supernatural and especially the witch community. He prefers to keep his magical abilities a secret, the Light of May hasn't changed that. He likes the idea of the Light of May. He just expects it'll go pear shaped eventually. And hopes too many people don't get hurt or killed when that happens. That said, he'd love to be proven wrong. Special Skills/Abilities: Like many fae blooded humans, Hal is a natural linguist. He picks up new languages easily and masters them quickly. He speaks and reads English, Spanish, French, Latin, and Greek. Personal Weaknesses: Hal's no spring chicken. While he's in good shape for his age, he's still past his prime. His body is pretty abused, he's been badly wounded by magic several times in his life. His bones and scars ache in the morning. He can't run, fight, or do anything physical for extended periods of time. He keeps his personal life to himself and is emotionally unavailable due to his nature alone and desire for privacy. He doesn't let many people in and those he does are often kept at arms length. Mostly because he doesn't want to get his heart broken again. His vision is going, he needs glasses to read and really any sort of small details. And now, he has trouble with water and cold. He constantly feels like he's freezing cold, gets nauseous and uncomfortable around any significant amount of water and just can't stand anything but warm summer weather. Personal Strengths: Hal is a master grey witch. As well, his fae blood gives him a natural talent with languages. Once won over, he's a loyal and stalwart ally. He is an honorable man of his word, and always a gentleman. He is also reasonably well off due to being a successful businessman and has some influence in the local magical community due to his bloodline and tenure in Scarlet Oaks. Recently, he rendered himself completely immune to fire and heat.
